Fuel Management Systems are an Essential Part of Fuel Security

This is the final article in our three-part series on fuel security.

The first article looked at the importance of controlling fuel supply. The second focused on preventative planned maintenance and the role it plays in reducing theft risk. This final article looks at the technology side of fuel security, and why fuel management systems are an essential tool for operators who need better visibility, tighter control and stronger protection against fuel loss and theft.

Fuel theft is not always a matter of forced access to a tank. It can also happen through poor control of dispensing, limited visibility over fuel movement or delays spotting unusual activity. For sites that depend on stored fuel, that makes monitoring and control just as important as the physical security of the installation itself.

That is where fuel management systems come in.

A fuel management system helps operators move beyond basic fuel storage and towards actively controlling how it is monitored, dispensed and accounted for. Depending on the site and the level of risk, this can range from straightforward tank monitoring through to advanced systems that provide oversight across multiple assets, pumps and locations.

The earlier an issue is identified, the easier it is to investigate, manage, and put right. If a tank level drops unexpectedly, a pump starts behaving unusually, or dispensing activity does not match expected usage, that information needs to be visible quickly. Without that visibility, losses may only be noticed after the damage has already been done.

For sites where fuel is business-critical, fuel management technology adds an important extra layer of protection. It improves accountability, helps identify suspicious activity earlier and gives operators more confidence that fuel is being used as intended.

Key fuel security technologies

The right solution depends on the type of site, the level of fuel usage and the degree of control required. In practice, there are a number of different technologies that can strengthen fuel security.

1. Fuel management systems and remote monitoring

Fuel management systems provide real-time visibility over tank levels, fuel use and alarm activity. This can include remote tank monitoring, sudden-loss alarms and connected systems that alert operators to unusual changes in stock levels or system behaviour.

This type of monitoring is particularly useful where theft may take place directly from the tank. For example, if a tank is drilled or siphoned and fuel levels fall unexpectedly.

OTS uses systems from partners like Jigsaw and other connected fuel monitoring technologies that help operators improve visibility and react more quickly when something goes wrong.

2. AVI technology for controlled dispensing

Another important layer of protection is AVI (Automatic Vehicle Identification).

AVI technology helps control fuel dispensing at the point of use by linking authorised vehicles to the pump. This reduces the risk of fuel being taken from the nozzle by the wrong vehicle or by an unauthorised user.

For operators managing fleets, service vehicles or regular on-site refuelling, this creates stronger accountability over who is taking fuel, when it is being taken and how much is being dispensed.

3. Digital oversight and digital twinning for larger operations

For larger or more complex sites, fuel security may need to go further than standard monitoring and dispensing control.

Some operations require a higher level of oversight across multiple pumps, storage tanks, fuel movements and even across multiple sites. In these environments, more advanced digital tools can be used to bring together information on tank condition, fuel flow, equipment performance and wider system behaviour.

Fuel management technology is not a replacement for physical security or planned maintenance. It works alongside them. Tanks still need to be secure, equipment still needs to be inspected and systems still need to be maintained properly. But when fuel theft risk is rising and operators need greater control, fuel management systems are an increasingly important part of the solution.

OTS supports clients with fuel management systems, AVI technology, remote monitoring and wider fuel security measures across fuel storage and dispensing installations. If your site depends on stored fuel, the right technology can make a significant difference to how well that fuel is protected, monitored and controlled.
