Why Regular Tank Servicing Matters
Fuel storage systems often operate for long periods without visible issues, but deterioration can develop slowly over time. Water ingress, fuel contamination, corrosion, pump wear and bund deterioration can all affect reliability, compliance and environmental protection if left unmanaged.
Regular tank servicing helps operators:
Identify early signs of corrosion or structural deterioration
Maintain fuel quality and reduce contamination risk
Prevent leaks, spills and environmental incidents
Reduce unplanned downtime and reactive repair costs
Maintain compliance documentation and inspection records
Extend the operational life of tanks, pumps and dispensing systems
For standby generator systems and critical infrastructure sites, preventative maintenance also helps ensure fuel systems perform reliably when needed most.

Planned Preventative Maintenance
A structured fuel tank maintenance programme reduces the likelihood of reactive callouts and keeps your site consistently compliant with The Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001.
Our Service Inspections are designed to suit the specific needs of each site, and we offer annual, bi-annual, quarterly, or bi-monthly inspections depending on the requirements.
Addressing issues identified during a Service Inspection is essential to minimise unscheduled downtime and reactive callouts. In cases where issues are more complex, such as product change (uplift) for ex-gasoil tanks or new tank installation projects, we will refer clients to our Environmental Services or Design & Installation teams.
New PPM Referral Scheme
As part of our commitment to supporting long-term client relationships, OTS has launched a new PPM Referral Scheme. If you're an existing client and refer a new client who purchases a qualifying OTS fuel storage system, you’ll receive a discounted rate on your next Planned Preventative Maintenance visit.
It’s our way of saying thank you and helping you save while promoting best practices in tank service and compliance.
Qualifying purchases include new steel tanks for fuel, AdBlue, leachate or other bulk liquids designed, manufactured, and installed by OTS.
Reactive Call Outs
When it comes to fuel storage and dispensing equipment, even the slightest fault can lead to significant losses in time and money. Whether a client is in an existing service contract or not, we provide quick and efficient support to rectify any issues that may arise.
At OTS Group, we believe that reactive callouts are an opportunity to not only fix the problem but also to review the entire set up and discuss preventive measures with the Transport and Maintenance Managers on-site. This helps to minimise future faults, and as Emma Tilley, our Service and Logistics Manager, notes, "prevention is always better than a cure."
-
Transport & Maintenance Managers often call us seeking repairs such as nozzle or hose replacements, or when gauges, probes or Fuel Management Systems malfunction. We understand the importance of getting things right the first time and our First-Time Fix objective reflects this. In fact, we are proud to report that we achieve a 95% success rate in fixing issues in a single callout.
-
Our Service and Logistics Manager plays a crucial role in ensuring this success. They take detailed information over the phone about the fault and equip our service engineers with the parts that are likely to be required. If there are parts we don't have in stock, we are committed to doing "whatever it takes" to get them as quickly as possible, so we can get the job done on the first site visit. This approach not only minimises downtime but also avoids the need for diagnostic-only callouts, which can be frustrating for clients.
-
Meet our team of highly skilled and dedicated Service Engineers who are committed to providing exceptional service to our clients. Our team lives by the motto "Whatever it takes" and they work tirelessly to ensure that we deliver on our promise to provide reliable and efficient service to our clients.
At OTS, we take a people-first approach to tank service and maintenance. We are proud to be "small enough to care, big enough to cope" and our team is always ready to go above and beyond to meet the unique needs of each of our clients.

Tank Service & Maintenance FAQs
-
For most above-ground storage tanks, an annual inspection is the recommended minimum. Sites with higher throughput, older tanks, or tanks storing critical backup fuel (such as generator tanks in data centres or hospitals) typically benefit from bi-annual or quarterly visits. OTS will recommend a schedule based on your specific site and usage.
-
Many fuel storage issues develop gradually and are not immediately visible. Common warning signs include water contamination, blocked filters, slow pump performance, inconsistent gauge readings, visible corrosion, fuel discolouration, or increased generator and engine faults.
Regular servicing helps identify these issues early before they develop into larger operational or environmental problems.
-
Older fuel tanks often require more detailed inspection and testing as part of a preventative maintenance programme. OTS offers non-destructive testing (NDT), ultrasonic thickness testing and internal inspections to assess tank condition, identify corrosion, and verify long-term structural integrity.
Inspection frequency depends on the tank age, fuel type, operating environment and site risk profile.
-
Yes, in most cases. The Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001 require that above-ground oil storage installations are maintained in good condition and inspected regularly. Failure to maintain a tank that subsequently leaks can result in enforcement action and significant remediation costs.
-
A service inspection is a one-off visit covering the condition of your tank and equipment at a point in time. A PPM (Planned Preventative Maintenance) contract schedules regular visits throughout the year, with consistent records kept across each visit. PPM contracts also give you priority response for reactive callouts and, in some cases, discounted rates.
-
Yes. OTS services tanks regardless of who manufactured or installed them. Our engineers are experienced across a wide range of tank types, sizes and configurations.
-
In many cases, yes. Planned maintenance can often be scheduled around operational requirements to minimise disruption. Depending on the system setup and the work being carried out, services such as inspections, fuel sampling, pump maintenance and fuel polishing can frequently be completed while sites remain operational.
For critical infrastructure environments, OTS works with clients to plan maintenance safely and minimise downtime wherever possible.
-
Wherever possible, yes. Our engineers can carry out fuel sampling, pump servicing and a compliance inspection in one visit, reducing disruption to your site. If tank cleaning or NDT is also required, we'll coordinate this as part of the same programme.
-
Yes - OTS provides fuel tank maintenance services nationwide. Our logistics team coordinates scheduling and engineer deployment across all regions.
