Leachate Landfill Tanks
OTS leachate landfill tanks are expertly designed for efficient and safe management of contaminated groundwater in land reclamation projects. Our tanks provide a robust solution tailored to meet the unique challenges of leachate storage and disposal.
What are Leachate Landfill Tanks?
Leachate tanks are a critical component of effective leachate solutions for landfill, land reclamation, and waste management projects. They are specifically designed to store contaminated groundwater extracted from a site in a safe and compliant manner.
Commonly referred to as leachate, this liquid can be highly corrosive, toxic, or acidic depending on previous site use and the materials present within the landfill. Effective leachate solutions therefore require more than simple storage; they demand robust containment, corrosion-resistant materials, and controlled transfer processes to protect both the environment and surrounding infrastructure.
OTS leachate tanks are engineered to safely contain this hazardous liquid until it can be transferred to a tanker and removed to an appropriate licensed waste facility for treatment and disposal. Designed for durability, compliance, and environmental protection, our tanks form part of a complete leachate management strategy tailored to the specific requirements of each site.
Leachate Tank Main Features
-
All OTS bunded steel leachate tanks are designed in accordance with CIRIA C736 guidance for leachate storage and manufactured to OFTEC OFS T200, covering both the primary tank and secondary containment. This provides full bund certification and supports compliance with Environment Agency expectations.
-
Manufactured using S275 steel with a plate thickness of 6mm under a controlled Manufacturing Control Plan (MCP). All tanks are factory pressure tested to 1.5 psi in line with OFS T200 standards.
-
Each tank is supplied with engineering drawings and a serial plate confirming capacity, production date, and pressure testing.
-
Chlorinated Rubber or Temaline lining is applied to the internal tank surface for corrosion resistance and longer lifespan.
-
We recommend a site-specific management plan that includes independent annual inspections and routine visual checks by site managers to monitor compliance and residue build-up.
-
Anti-slip finish on walkway surfaces, lockable hooped ladders, and optional full or partial top access walkways.
-
Tanks are built to order with capacities from 25,000L to 125,000L, with either open or closed bunded designs based on environmental protection needs.
-
Weir design with additional manways for improved compartment access
‘StayLess’ design for safer residue removal
Overfill protection devices to safeguard against input failure
Medium abrasive isolation valves suited for leachate
Tank and bund monitoring via Cat & Mouse gauge or ATEX-approved remote access gauge
Breakaway couplings for added spill protection
-
On completion of your project, OTS can safely dispose of the tanks on your behalf.

A Leachate Storage Case Study
OTS Group is proud to have recently delivered a fully compliant leachate storage solution, hitting all the needs of our client’s brief and delivered on time and on budget. The main goal for this project was to supply, transport, and commission six new leachate landfill storage tanks, while also managing the decommissioning and safe disposal of the client's redundant tanks. The challenge lay in delivering a seamless solution that kept site downtime minimal, ensured safety, and incorporated the latest technological advancements in tank design.
-
Understanding the implications of prolonged downtime for our client, OTS Group offered an end-to-end service, encompassing transportation, contract crane lift, and decommissioning of the tanks. This turnkey approach meant the client experienced minimal disruptions during the project's execution.
-
OTS Group provided a range of both cylindrical and rectangular steel bunded tanks, spanning capacities from 50m3 to 100m3. Notably, a unique 'Stay less' option was introduced, ensuring our client was equipped with state-of-the-art storage capabilities. The inclusion of redesigned weir options showcased our commitment to innovation tailored to specific client needs.
-
Considering the nature of leachate landfill storage, OTS incorporated a series of security enhancements. These included a lockable hooped ladder, a safety walkway, and breakaway couplings - all designed to minimise potential spillage and damage. Additionally, each tank was treated with a specialised rust inhibitor lining, further extending the tanks' lifespan and ensuring the stored leachate remained uncontaminated.
Leachate Solutions FAQs
-
Leachate is contaminated liquid that drains through landfill material, collecting dissolved and suspended pollutants. Depending on site history, it may contain heavy metals, hydrocarbons, or acidic compounds. Because of this, leachate must be stored in purpose-built, bunded tanks designed to prevent leaks, corrosion, and environmental contamination.
-
Leachate solutions refer to the complete process of safely containing, storing, and removing contaminated groundwater from landfill or remediation sites. This typically includes engineered leachate tanks, pipework, pumping systems, monitoring equipment, and licensed waste removal to ensure environmental compliance and safe disposal.
-
Yes. OTS designs and manufactures leachate tanks to meet site-specific requirements, including capacity, material specification, corrosion protection, access points, and integration with pumping or monitoring systems. Each solution is tailored to the operational and environmental demands of the project.
-
Yes. OTS leachate tanks are manufactured in accordance with UK environmental and pollution control regulations. Tanks are fully bunded and designed to support compliance with the Control of Pollution Regulations and relevant waste management requirements. Our team can also advise on site-specific regulatory obligations.
-
Once a leachate tank reaches capacity, the contents are safely transferred to a tanker and transported to a licensed waste treatment facility for appropriate processing and disposal. OTS can coordinate this process as part of a complete environmental service package.
