Fuel Resilience at Midlands Hospital
The site operates multiple fuel storage tanks supporting standby gen sets and heating systems. Due to intermittent usage, a proactive fuel management programme was implemented to maintain fuel quality and system reliability.
OTS Group was engaged to deliver a varied phased programme.
This included inspection, fuel sampling, fuel polishing, tank cleaning, and system upgrades. The works commenced with detailed fuel sampling from the top, middle, and bottom of each tank. Samples were analysed for water content, particulates, FAME, microbial contamination, and sulphur to establish a baseline fuel condition.
Fuel polishing was undertaken using a staged filtration process, with fuel circulated through progressively finer filters. Filtration began at 25 micron and stepped down through 15-, 10-, and 5-micron stages. This method ensured effective removal of contaminants while preventing premature filter blockage. Polishing rates averaged 250–300 litres per minute, with approximately 42,000 litres processed over a little over one day.
Following polishing, the tanks were internally cleaned and inspected. Non-destructive testing and integrity checks confirmed the tanks remained in satisfactory condition. The polished fuel was then filtered back into the tanks through fine filtration. Repeat sampling confirmed a measurable improvement in fuel quality.
To support ongoing fuel condition management, a permanently mounted dual-purpose fuel polishing system is being installed. This will allow fuel circulation and polishing either on demand or via scheduled operation, supporting consistent fuel quality between routine tests and operational use.
Further system enhancements are planned as part of a wider fuel infrastructure improvement programme.
